Decorah Mayor Lorraine Borowski vetoes resolution authorizing Main Street Iowa application

Decorah Mayor Lorraine Borowski has vetoed the Decorah City council's approval of a resolution authorizing participation in the Main Street Iowa program.

The veto will be discussed at a special meeting of the city council at 7:00 Thursday morning at City Hall.

In a statement accompanying the veto, Borowski says the application does not have broad community support.  The Winneshiek County Board, Decorah Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and the Winneshiek County Development Board of Directors have voted against similar resolutions presented to them.

The mayor also noted the proposed Main Street budget calls for a city investment of $100,000 over three years, not including the additional Hotel/Motel revenue sources.  Says Borowski, "The comments I hear most include the need for improvement of infrastructures (streets) and the importance of maintaining or reducing taxes."
