Now that the Decorah Sustainability Committee has finished holding two public meetings to solicit ideas about how to build a better Decorah, eight different task groups are setting to work to develop goals and strategies consistent with the ideas and visions generated by public input. The Build A Better Decorah Initiative is a 4-stage process to engage the community in resilience planning in order to keep Decorah thriving well into the future even in the face of uncertain environmental, social and economic pressures.
Over 60 Decorah residents participated in two sessions at Decorah City Hall earlier this month. The sessions focused on eight areas: energy, waste, transportation, air/water, land use, economic development, education/outreach and health/human services. Some of the concepts discussed included walking bridges across the river for greater connections to downtown and trails, a citywide app for both citywide communication and tourism, bike sharing programs, air and water quality monitoring projects and a greater focus on intergenerational activities.
"Build a Better Decorah" organizers say if you were unable to attend one of the community meetings but would like to offer your ideas for the future, please email the Sustainability Committee at sustainabledecorah@deocrahia.org or take the online survey at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/sustainabledecorah.
