New site is being discussed for veterans memorial

Support is growing for a veterans memorial at Decorah City Hall.  Now the question becomes, "at what location?"

Members of the city's Property Committee have met a second time with veterans wanting to have a memorial.  The veterans have rejected the idea of using property on East Water Street, either in Mary Christopher Park or next to Water Street between the chiropractic offices and the funeral home.  The idea of using land at the Army Reserve Center has also been rejected because of the difficulty of getting the federal government's agreement.

That leaves City Hall as the location of a new memorial, but a second location at City Hall besides in front of the building is being discussed.  Property Committee members say the east side of City Hall already has three flagpoles and several tall trees.  Veterans have talked about wanting to have a "place that gives honor and dignity" to their group, and city council members think the shaded area on the side of City Hall fits that description well.

The two groups will continue to work on details of location and design.  Veteran Glenn Larson says his group would like an answer soon from the city so fundraising for the memorial can begin.
