Winneshiek County Supervisors will be asked next Monday to vote in support of Decorah's application to become a Main Street Iowa community.
Main Street volunteer Steve Luse met with county supervisors Monday to explain the program. Luse said if Decorah is named a Main Street Iowa community, it would have free access to a number of state resources, including the services of an architect.
Lansing, Elkader and West Union are among the Iowa communities which have already qualified for Iowa Main Street designation. Luse told supervisors such a designation would encourage "preservation-based economic development" in Decorah's Self-Supporting Municipal Improvement District (SSMID), which includes downtown Decorah and parts of West Decorah.
Supporters of the program say they plan to submit an application to the Iowa Department of Economic Development by the deadline later this month. The IDED Board will make a decision in early August.
