Friday is the last day ever of classes at North Winneshiek School for many students

Students at North Winneshiek School will be dismissed Friday morning, ending another chapter in the history of the school, which will be used for home schooling programs next fall, with other students attending classes in Decorah.

As of July 1st, the North Winneshiek Community School District, which was created in 1964, will no longer exist. Three generations of students have attended classes at North Winn, but changes have been necessary in recent years due to declining enrollment.  Beginning in 2001, high school students attended Decorah High School, with some attending Mabel High School.  Then in a special election held on February 6th of 2018, voters concluded that North Winneshiek and Decorah School Districts should combine.

School officials say they plan a quiet observance on Friday morning, involving only students and teachers.
