Two Decorah bald eaglets fall off the nest tree; one recovered

The search continues for "D32," one of the eaglets at the Decorah bald eagle nest.

Raptor Resource Project says the eaglet dropped from a branch of the tree around 6:00 p.m. Tuesday.  Then, around 2:40 Wednesday afternoon, the second eaglet, "D33," fell from the tree in nearly the same place.

The Iowa DNR notified Raptor Resource Project before 3:00 Wednesday afternoon that D33 had been located and retrieved.  The eaglet was taken to the Decorah Fish Hatchery.  No obvious injuries were noted.  Raptor Resource volunteers took D33 to S.O.A.R. (Saving Our Avian Resources).  An RRP Facebook post says, "We will have no further information about D33's condition until such time that the veterinary exam is completed."

Meanwhile, the search continues for D32.  On Wednesday RRP Board Director and eagle biologist Brett Mandernack and wildlife assistant Ryan Schmitz searched the area near the nest but were unable to locate D32 or even hear the eaglet.  RRP is putting plans in place for another search Thursday and will monitor the travels of the parents in hopes of getting clues.
