Farmers in Winneshiek County and across the state continue to be hampered by heavy rainfall and damaging storms.
According to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service, Iowa farmers averaged only one day suitable for fieldwork statewide during the week ending May 26th, although Northeast Iowa fared slightly better.
Not surprisingly, there is nowhere in Iowa where topsoil moisture levels are rated either "short" or "very short." 41 percent of farmers report adequate topsoil moisture, with 59 percent saying they have too much topsoil moisture.
Northeast Iowa corn growers now have 76 percent of the expected crop planted, which is 10 days behind last year and 2 weeks behind the 5-year average. Only 23 percent of corn in Northeast Iowa fields has emerged yet.
