Seven North Winn Kindergarten students saved and recycled more than nine pounds of plastic from their afternoon snack breaks this school year.
The students noticed the triangular recycling symbol on the bottoms of their milk cups and asked if the class could recycle rather than discard the cups. Teacher Joyce Richert agreed, and soon the class was drinking their milk, rinsing their cups and saving them in a big bucket.
The students last Friday took their cups to the school's plastic-recycling bin, and talked about the kinds of products that might be made with their cups.
Kindergarteners also kept nearly 1,000 non-recyclable cartons out of the Winneshiek County landfill by drinking milk poured from recyclable gallon cartons during milk break.
At breakfast and lunch all North Winn students and staff drank milk from a bulk cooler, served in washable cups. Staff estimate that the school kept 10,000 non-recyclable 8-ounce cartons out of the landfill this school year.
