Calmar native Karla Brown has joined Dragonfly Books as the store's new Events Coordinator.
Karla replaces Kate Scott, who recently accepted a position as Program Specialist with the Midwest Independent Booksellers Association. "I have loved attending author talks at Dragonfly for years," says Karla, "and I am thrilled to be joining the team."
Karla brings a depth of event planning and coordination experience to Dragonfly Books, along with a passion for books, writing, and reading. Karla comes to Dragonfly Books after a career of teaching English for 37 years, 32 of those at Hawkeye Community College in Waterloo. In addition to her teaching experience, Karla served as Vesterheim Museum's Regional Events Coordinator for two and a half years. Karla currently serves on the Friends of the Library Board for the Decorah Public Library and is a member of the Sons of Norway.
A native of Calmar, Karla returned to Decorah three years ago to be closer to family--and to be outdoors in "the most beautiful part of Iowa." Karla loves to kayak, hike, bike, cross country ski, and snowshoe. In addition to outdoor activities, Karla is addicted to reading and doing various crafts, including making gnomes out of Nordic sweaters, upcycling old windows, and using rhubarb leaves to create cement garden decor.
