Porter House Museum board wants to install climate control and solar array

The Porter House Museum's board of directors is kicking off a fundraising campaign to provide climate control at the museum and to offset the environmental impact of increased electric consumption through the installation of a visually discreet rooftop solar array. The museum is seeking public support in raising $19,000 to get both projects off the ground.

A museum spokesperson says temperature and humidity controls will help to better preserve the museum's historical and natural history collections. Climate control will also improve the health and comfort of visitors and volunteers.

Working in conjunction with local heating and cooling contractors, electricians and the Winneshiek Energy District, the museum has developed a plan to install an energy efficient air-source heat pump for cooling and supplemental heating as well as a 4.41 kilowatt rooftop solar array to offset the increased electric consumption. The solar array will be visually discreet, so as not to diminish the historic character of the building.

Tax deductible donations of any amount may be sent to Porter House Museum, PO Box 115, Decorah, IA 52101. Donations may also be submitted online via the "Donate" button at www.porterhousemuseum.org.
