The North Winneshiek School facilities – what we know and what we don't know

Posted: Mon, Apr 8, 2019 9:54 PM

With the Decorah and North Winneshiek Schools merger, there are many issues to be resolved, particularly related to the North Winneshiek  facilities. Here is some of what we know:

• The North Winneshiek School will not be used as an attendance facility.
• It will be maintained to keep it in useable condition. This includes heating and water monitoring, with a part-time custodial presence.
• A new septic system will be installed to replace the no longer acceptable drainage lagoon.
• A keyless entry system will be installed for improved building security.
• There are ongoing assessments of furniture and equipment use that could benefit the new district.

Discussions will continue regarding the future use, but are somewhat on hold until the transition is complete and students are out of the building. Options remain open, and include:

• There is a potential that the Home School Assistance Program (HSAP) could locate in part of the facility for the next year. The gym and softball field could be in demand.
• Building use policies, such as in the Decorah Schools, could mean community use or rental of space.
• The property, or portions thereof, could be sold to either private or public interest. There have been inquiries, but they have not been addressed and will not be until a later date.

The Decorah Community Interim School Board discussed these issues on Monday night and will continue the transition issues as part of their regular agendas.
