The 2019 Decorah PTO Spell-a-thon is going into high gear this coming week, spelling tests will be given to all students.
Decorah Parent Teacher Organization volunteers have been planning Spell-a-Thon 2019 in an effort to raise money for the Decorah Schools. Students in grades K-6 are collecting pledges from family, friends and neighbors, based on the number of words they will correctly spell.
All students in grades K-6 who return their completed pledge envelope will have their name entered into a drawing at their school for a gift certificate. The classroom that collects the most pledges at each school will be awarded a pizza party, and the student receiving the most pledges will receive a $100 bill and an invitation to open their own savings account at Decorah Bank and Trust.
The event, held every other year, serves as the PTO's largest fundraiser, raising approximately $30,000 with each Spell-A-Thon held over the last several years. Examples of programs and projects benefiting from past Spell-A-Thon proceeds include the Decorah Schools' Library Collections, the West Side/Community Natural Playground, Kid Striders, College Scholarships, plus many other teacher requests, and programs and projects at each school, such as providing a spotlight for the Carrie Lee Elementary Auditorium.
Proceeds from this year's Spell-A-Thon will help fund upcoming author visits, special events, theatre performances, the Back-to-School Pool Party and many other general needs and purposes at schools. The PTO operates under a 2-year budget, determined by the success of each Spell-A-Thon event.
