Did Winneshiek County Treasurer Wayne Walter violate state ethics standards by staying for free at a Florida beach property belonging to someone who has Iowa governments as customers?
Walter has denied any wrongdoing, describing GovTech Services founder Marc Carr as a friend. Carr is the owner of GovTech Services, which hosts the website used by most Iowa counties to collect property and motor vehicle taxes.
An Associated Press article last week calls it "a long, cozy and ethically questionable relationship between county officials and an important vendor."
But it is the State Auditor's Office which will look into the matter. State Auditor Rob Sand tells decorahnews.com his office's investigation is in the early stages, and it is too soon to tell how long it might take. However, Sand does say that when his office has completed its investigation, the findings will be sent to the Winneshiek County Attorney's Office.
