Ask The Answer Person: "Why is the Street Department throwing all the snow from the street, bike path, and sidewalk into our yards?"

(Linda asks, "Why is the Street Department throwing all the snow from the street, bike path, and sidewalk into our yards?  We have no place to throw the snow that is in our driveways!  Who decided to do this?  Will the street department be back in the spring time to remove the salt, gravel and sand that they put in our yard?"):

The Answer Person says: "I feel like I've been doing nothing besides shoveling snow for as long as I can remember, so I understand your frustration.

But I'd like to put in a plea for you--and all of us--to try to take a deep breath and resolve these questions in the best way to get a solution to them.  That way is to call the Decorah Street Department at (563) 382-2157 and in the nicest tone of voice possible explain the problem you are having.

The Answer Person has always believed 'You catch more flies with honey than you do with vinegar,' so take a deep breath and talk to the city workers in a way that shows you understand there are 8,100 residents in Decorah and, as much as they would love to drop everything they're doing and rush to your house, they have a pretty long list of calls that came in before yours."
