The row of towed cars and trucks behind Decorah City Hall has gotten shorter recently, but the Decorah Police Department says that doesn't mean they aren't still towing vehicles stuck in snowbanks on city streets.
At first, around one dozen vehicles were towed from city streets due to the snow emergency and taken to the parking lot behind City Hall. Now there are just three vehicles left.
However, the Decorah Street Department will still report to police any vehicle which has been left parked on a street for several days and is preventing road crews from clearing the space.
After the vehicles are towed, police will send registered letters to the last known address of the owner. If there is a lien on the vehicle, the lender also will be notified by registered mail. If the vehicles still go unclaimed, police will dispose of them through either a future public auction or a future disposal to a dismantling company.
To prevent this from happening, vehicle owners need to claim the vehicle, pay the towing fee and make sure their vehicle registration is current. Any other costs incurred will also be the responsibility of the vehicle owner.
