Wait and see – the approach taken by School Board on early retirees working into June

On Monday night the Decorah Community School Board discussed a "what if" situation. What if there is at least one more weather cancellation for school this year? Currently the last school day (as of Monday night) is scheduled for May 31.
If there is another cancellation, that means school days will go into June. If early retirees work into the month of June they cannot draw an IPERS retirement check during June, as they likely had planned for. The Board delayed any decision making, pending the status of school
cancellations, and hope they can make a decision by April, if necessary.
Teachers are under contractual obligation that could take them into June, unless the Board devises a way for them to "make up" days in advance.
The Board did agree that the decision needed to be driven by what is best for the students.
