Open Enrollment is the process by which parents/guardians residing in an Iowa school district may enroll their children into another Iowa school district.
• The deadline for students entering Grades 1-12 for the upcoming school year is March 1st.
•The deadline for students entering kindergarten is September 2.
Applications for Open Enrollment are available at the Decorah Community School District Central Office at 510 Winnebago, Decorah.
Open Enrollment deadlines are important, since without legislatively defined "good cause" (such as medical issues or students moving), the involved districts could deny that open enrollment for late applicants. School districts also need the information to plan for budgeting and class sizes.
The legislative goal for Open Enrollment is "to permit a wide range of educational choices for children enrolled in schools in this state and to maximize ability to use those choices. It is therefore the intent ...... to maximize parental choice and access to educational opportunities which are not available to children because of where they live."
