SHIIP stands for Senior Health Insurance Information Program. It is a program through the state of Iowa that is staffed by volunteers who provide free informational materials and one-to-one assistance. Volunteers may help with Medicare coverage, Medicare supplement insurance, long term care insurance, or Medicare and insurance claims.
Winneshiek Medical Center volunteer coordinator Karla Bakken says they currently have two volunteers for the SHIIP program. Decorah residents Dave Sweet has volunteered 15 years and Jim Sims for the last 7 years. Bakken says the program could use a few more volunteers.
Volunteers take part in off site training and online training, and have training throughout the year. Volunteers need to have good listening skills, computer and internet capabilities and an interest in working with and helping others.
If you would like to become a volunteer with the SHIIP program or would like more information, contact Bakken at 563-387-3036.
