Winneshiek County supervisors discuss a resolution about absentee ballots

Winneshiek County Supervisors had a brief discussion Monday about state laws involving the counting of absentee ballots. The supervisors are preparing a resolution and a cover letter to send to members of the Iowa House of Representatives, which last week voted against counting 29 absentee ballots from Winneshiek County in the Iowa House District 55 election.
Supervisors were joined Monday by Democratic candidate Kayla Koether, who said she commends supervisors for speaking out on behalf of Winneshiek County voters. "I commend you for reaching out to the (Iowa) House," she told them.
However, she said she also is concerned that the proposal backed by supervisors--changing state law to say all ballots received after polls closed will not be counted--shortens the time period for absentee balloting even further than recent changes which reduced the voting period to 29 days.
Supervisors have not completed writing the cover letter to go with their resolution, so no action was taken at Monday's meeting.
