After a second round of snow, City of Decorah officials think about sidewalks, fire hydrants and parked vehicles

City of Decorah Street Department workers are tackling the job of getting rid of another January snowstorm. They have some hurdles in getting that job done, so several city officials are asking for the public's help.

Decorah Police Chief Bill Nixon says the snow emergency in effect does mean that people can't leave their vehicles on the street for several days.  "We are aggressively towing vehicles," he says.

Decorah Water Department manager Todd Ihde is asking the public to check water hydrants near their homes to make sure they're not covered with snow.  Ihde says shoveling out the fire hydrants is important because if there's a fire, "every second means a lot."

Finally, Decorah Mayor Lorraine Borowski is reminding the public to shovel sidewalks.  Earlier, city officials publicized the city ordinance which allows city workers to shovel sidewalks themselves--and charge property owners for the work done.
