Number of flu cases in Iowa keeps rising

The number of flu cases in Iowa continues to rise.  The Iowa Department of Public Health reports the State Hygienic Laboratory has confirmed 32 influenza cases, with 13 influenza-related hospitalizations.

According to Winneshiek County Public Health Nurse Nancy Sacquitne,
"It does appear that the numbers may be lower than last season in regard to influenza associated hospitalizations at this time.  Iowa Department of Public Health uses sentinel hospitals, long term care, and school surveillance programs for their tracking and reporting so does not include all facilities across the state."

Sacquitne also wants residents to know it's not too late to get a flu shot. "You can still get the vaccination. There are several tips you can follow to keep yourself well. Stay home if you are sick. Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your elbow when coughing or sneezing, and wash your hands often," shared Sacquitne, "Remember it does take two weeks to develop the antibodies to help fight the influenza."
