Monday's meeting of the Iowa House of Representative's Election Contest Committee
An "Election Contest Committee" has been created by Iowa House Speaker Linda Upmeyer and met for the first time late Monday afternoon to discuss the Iowa House District 55 election race between Republican Michael Bergan and Democrat Kayla Koether.
The 5-member committee is comprised of three Republicans and two Democrats. Steven Holt, a Republican from Denison, has been named chair of the committee. Also appointed are Council Bluffs Republican Jon Jacobsen, Missouri Valley Republican Matt Windschitl, Des Moines Democrat Brian Meyer and Clinton Democrat Mary Wolfe.
Monday's organizational meeting in the State Supreme court offices lasted just 15 minutes. The committee scheduled a 4:00 p.m. Wednesday committee meeting at which attorneys for both sides will present oral arguments. The two attorneys will be given 30 minutes apiece to present their case, then will have another 15-minute response time.
There was some discussion Monday about whether the committee should also allow witnesses to speak to the committee. That will not be allowed on Wednesday, but could be allowed at a third meeting--if the committee of three Republicans and two Democrats votes to schedule a third meeting.
