(The following Letter to the Editor has been submitted by Marty Steele of Decorah):
"Thank you to the generosity and open hearts of the Decorah community as witnessed at the Epiphany Fiesta held at Good Shepherd Church last Thursday, on January 10th. This was a truly ecumenical event sponsored by the Decorah Area Faith Coalition with the intent of raising funds for the immigrant emergency fund "Neighbors Helping Neighbors," administered by the Decorah United Church of Christ.
Over 25 volunteers served song, soup and Rosca de Reyes to 200 participants and raised over $2,400. The festive bread was baked by an immigrant friend, Fareway assisted with great generosity and Thrivent provided funds for groceries. Local radio stations KDEC and KVIK announced the event, as did decorahnews.com and other local newspapers.
During an incredibly challenging time for those fleeing violence in their home communities and those seeking to help with shelter and support, this event was a bright spot and gave me hope that we can come to honor our history of providing refuge, which of course is how my ancestors arrived in this country. We are so enriched by the friendship and gifts of the newcomers among us if we can move past our fear. Thank you Decorah!"
