(Iowa House Speaker Linda Upmeyer's office issued the following news release on Wednesday afternoon):

"This afternoon, Speaker Linda Upmeyer (R-Clear Lake) announced the Iowa House will appoint an Election Contest Committee to hear the contested House District 55 election.  The committee will meet shortly after the Legislature convenes on Monday, January 14th.

Chapters 57 and 59 of the Iowa Code describe the process for individuals to contest the results of an election.

The House will follow past precedent by appointing a bipartisan committee of legislators to hear the election contest.  The committee will be able to hear arguments from each side, gather necessary information on the contest, and issue a report in a timely manner which will go to the full House for a vote.  The House will then vote to resolve the contest.

Members of the committee will be appointed on Monday,January 14th, and an organizational meeting will be held later that day. Committee meetings will be live streamed on the legislative website.

Until the election contest is resolved, incumbent Rep.Michael Bergan will continue to serve as the Representative for District 55."
