It's been a little over two weeks since First Lutheran Church first announced it needed to close their sanctuary and fellowship hall due to structural concerns. Since then, Sunday services have been held in the Noble Recital Hall on the Luther College campus.
"We have been touched by the outpouring of support from our congregation and the community," says vice president of First Lutheran Church council Karen Trewin. "Our congregation has been understanding and flexible with the changes we have needed to make during what is traditionally a very active time at church. We have had several offers of help from the Decorah area faith community for help with space for funerals and other events."
Trewin says the services at Luther are going well and everyone enjoys the beautiful space. "Luther College has been gracious in hosting us and we appreciate all their efforts to accommodate what we need. Our pastors and staff have brought elements from the church to make it feel like home."
First Lutheran will be holding three Christmas Eve services In the Noble Recital Hall, and no services on Christmas day. "Christmas will be as joyful and celebratory as it always is," shares Trewin. " We adjusted our worship times slightly, but we will still have three services: 3:00 p.m. Family Worship (children's sermon, traditional music), 5:00 p.m. New Song Worship (led by our Praise Band and featuring both traditional and more modern music), and 7:00 p.m. Traditional Worship (traditional music, adult choir). Overflow seating will be available, if needed, in one of the choral rooms in Jenson Hall with a video link."
Trewin adds, "Our sanctuary is rich with history and memories. First Lutheran is a meeting place for many programs and services. It's part of our skyline, our heritage and our community. There are many who are grieving and concerned about not being able to be in the space, and that is understandable. We are working hard to understand our options and are focused on safety, communication and getting back to our programming to further the important work of the church."
Plans are underway to secure a worship location for January and beyond, and Trewin says they hope to announce that information soon. "Our plan is to proceed with our three services and educational programming in January."
