The Decorah City Council will hold a work session at 5:15 p.m. Monday at City Hall to review the suggestions made by the Community Visioning group--suggestions aimed at making Decorah a more walkable community. The meeting is open to the public, as all city meetings are, but it is not a public hearing--that will take place some time early in 2019.
(Julie e-mails: "Who sits on the Community Visioning group and if they are commissioned by the city? I did speak with a city employee and the employee had no idea of whom or what connection that had to the city. Could you help out?"):
Mr. Answer Person says: "There are 12 members of the Decorah Community Visioning Steering Committee--Don Arendt, Dawson Bauer, April Bril, Jeremy Bril, Steve Luse, Emily Neal, Kaia Neal, Andy Nimrod, Nathan Thompson, Scott Timm, Kristina Wiltgen and Joel Zook."
(Another Julie e-mails: "I would suggest that you have the visioning committee talk with some communities that have installed bump outs on the corners of their streets. There are issues with snow removal, etc. Oelwein has them. West Union has them--and most residents are not in favor of them."):
Mr. Answer Person says: "Ahh, bumpouts--just slightly less controversial than roundabouts! Without getting into that issue, let me just state that street projects get reviewed by the city's Streets Committee and by the full city council. In other words, the Community Visioning group is making suggestions, but the people in charge of determining whether those suggestions get put into effect are the seven members of the Decorah City Council."
