If you're heading out of town for the Thanksgiving holiday, you'll have one more thing to be thankful for: a recent drop in gas prices.
Although nationally gas prices are up 8-cents from last year, they have recently plunged to the lowest level in several months. Currently the national average $2.62, which is seven-cents less than a week ago and the largest one-week decline in pump price this year. Iowa and a handful of other states have seen even larger recent declines. Michigan is down 33-cents, while Delaware, Iowa, Indiana and Kentucky are all down 32-cents on average versus a month ago.
Compared to a year ago, only six states in the country have cheaper gas prices today, five of which are Great Lakes and Central states: Illinois ($2.68), Michigan ($2.60), Indiana ($2.52), Iowa ($2.53) and Ohio ($2.40).
AAA projects 54 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more from home this Thanksgiving, a 4.8 percent increase over last year. Of those traveling, 48.5 million are expected to drive.
