The Winneshiek County Sheriff's Office is one squad car short from normal this week. That's because a deer crashed head-on into one of the squad cars over the weekend, leaving the squad car a total loss.
Sheriff Dan Marx says the deputy driving the car was responding to a report of a burglary when a deer came up onto the roadway, right in front of the squad car. The resulting crash destroyed the roof and windshield of the vehicle, as well as seriously damaging the passenger's side. Marx says the vehicle has been declared a total loss. It is at a local car repair shop, waiting until any undamaged equipment or anything else salvageable can be taken from the car.
Marx says the county had insurance on the squad car and it does have other vehicles it can use, but the accident will be an inconvenience for awhile.
