Firefighters called to rural Decorah home Tuesday night

Decorah firefighters responded to a house fire at 2693 Walnut Creek Road around 7:45 Tuesday night.

The homeowner reported a fire in the basement and the house filling with smoke. On arrival, firefighters encountered heavy fire in the utility room in the basement and found that the fire was spreading in the basement ceiling space and had burned through the ceiling into the first floor.

The fire caused significant damage to the basement utility room and the floor of the first floor.  The Decorah Fire Department was on the scene for about three and a half hours.

The Calmar Fire Department, Ridgeway Fire Department, Cresco Fire Department, Winneshiek Medical Center Ambulance, Winneshiek County Sheriff's Department and Dispatch and Winneshiek County EMA also responded to the fire.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
