258 people voted Tuesday at a satellite voting station at the Luther College Student Union.
County Auditor Ben Steines says turnout was around three times higher than the 85 people who voted at Luther during the 2014 off-year election.
One of the students who voted, senior Alexander Davis, said the satellite voting station on campus made it very easy to cast a ballot. He said he voted because he felt it was important for his generation to do their duty and not be complacent about the government.
First year student Marissa Kremers agreed that "your vote matters," adding that's especially true in a swing state like Iowa. Another first year student, Evergreen Wildingway, said voting is the power of democracy and he especially wanted to vote after this year has been so "different."
According to Steines, 258 ballots were cast, 129 from Decorah Ward 4, 124 from Decorah Ward 5, three from Decorah Township and two from Canoe Township.
168 registered Democrats, 15 registered Republicans, and 75 other voters cast ballots. 232 ballots were cast by people with on campus addresses and 26 ballots by people with off-campus addresses.
