(decorahnews.com is beginning a series of stories about ideas from the Community Visioning project)
Members of the Community Visioning Group which has been meeting for eight months to discuss possible transportation changes in Decorah have come up with a lot of ideas.
Group members say they're looking over their lists of ideas to find projects that might be easiest to accomplish. One of those projects is a "traffic calming" project proposed for the Broadway Street and Winnebago Street intersection.
Surveys by the group show more than 50 kids and parents typically try to walk across the intersection after school. Another 70 kids head to Decorah High School for cross country practices in season. All that makes the intersection a high-traffic, important crossing for pedestrians.
The proposal by the visioning group would create bump-outs on the remaining three corners of the intersection which don't have bump-outs. The change would decrease the crossing distance for pedestrians.
As part of the project, there could also be created stormwater management features such as rain gardens, as well as other landscaping features.
