Decorah has its earliest ever snowfall on Sunday

If Sunday's snowfall in Decorah is classifid as "official," it would mark the earliest recorded snowfall for Decorah's weather history. The previous earliest snowfall was recorded on October 17th, 1952.

Since 1893, when weather records began for Decorah, there have been 10 Octobers with an "official" measurable snowfalls. Now there are 11 Octobers with measurable snowfalls--provided Sunday's snowfall is "official."

Decorah meteorologist and Luther College Mathematics and Environmental Studies Professor Richard Bernatz says the greatest single day of October snowfall is the 29th of 1917 with 11.0 inches.  1917 is also in the record books as the snowiest October with a total of 12.5 inches with another 1.5 inches falling on the 23rd that October.
