Employers in Northeast Iowa have been commenting that low unemployment levels have made it difficult to find available employees. This is especially true in the food service industry, where 9-to-5 hours are rare. Decorah employers have especially been having a difficult time, as increased tourism creates a greater demand for workers.
Now Northeast Iowa Community College is creating a "Culinary Foundations Certificate" program that will include a 10-week class in Decorah at the new community kitchen built by Spectrum Industries. Students will learn knife skills, general cooking, serving methods and superior customer service. There will be instruction in food safety and proper operation of food equipment.
