September 11th was designated a national day of service by Congress in 2009 in honor of the victims and heroes of that day. The designation encourages Americans to come together to help each other. Locally, people can find ways to help each other through volunteer opportunities today and everyday with Northeast Iowa RSVP.
Director Deana Hageman says, "Volunteers can work with young or old, inside or outside, at libraries, museums, schools, and nursing homes. There are opportunities to work with Veterans, and animals, help people with taxes (training provided), sort donations, and help with local blood drives. RSVP volunteers can pick where they want to volunteer and how many hours they have to give."
