Registration has begun for youth classes this fall at the Folk Art School at Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum. The youth classes include "Norske Skole," "Kids-maling (Rosemaling)—Frozen," "Fun with Fiber for Kids" and "Kids: Forging with Fire."
"Norske Skole" is for kids ages 8 to 10. It's led by students from the Luther College Nordic Studies Department. It meets from 3:15 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. for six Tuesdays starting September 4th and is $35 per student. Participants become acquainted with the Norwegian language while exploring cultural activities of Norway through folk arts, songs, and games.
"Kids-maling (Rosemaling)—Frozen" meets from 3:15 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. for six Tuesdays starting September 11th. It is for ages 10 to 17 and is $35 per student. It's led by local rosemaler Sally Stromseth.
"Fun with Fiber for Kids" meets from 3:15 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. starting September 12th and meets for six Wednesdays. It is taught by local weaver Laura Demuth, is for ages 10 to 17, and costs $35 per student. Two new components have been added to the class--lucet braiding, a type of cord making that dates back to the time of the Vikings, and nalbinding, a Nordic way of making socks and mittens out of yarn.
"Kids: Forging with Fire" meets for four Saturday mornings from 9:00 a.m. until noon, starting October 6th. Students will learn to form metal at the fire and forge. This class is for ages 13-17 and is $65 per student. The class is taught by Brian Fuhrmann and participants will learn basic forging theory, shop safety, and proper use of tools
