Decorah High School about to launch new hybrid scheduling

Posted: Mon, Aug 13, 2018 8:50 PM

Decorah High School Principal Kim Sheppard updated the Decorah Community School Board Monday night regarding last minute plans and staff training as the high school transitions into a new scheduling format.

The hybrid schedule involves numerous changes, and includes longer class periods and "flex times" late Tuesday and Friday afternoons. The flex times will allow for students to request, or they may be directed to, special offerings during those times that are designed to provide them extra time in areas where they may need assistance. They also may seek additional academic enhancements. Another major benefit of the flex time scheduling will be the dramatic reduction of lost classroom time for extracurricular travel.

Students will begin the year with the traditional 7 hour schedule for the first two days of school on August 23th and 24th, with full transition to the new schedule on August 27th.

The change was driven by teacher interest, and Sheppard reports enthusiasm from both the student and teacher communities. While she acknowledges there will undoubtedly be some transition bumps, she is confident the new system will be a major improvement for more effective and efficient staffing to meet individual student needs.

Parents and students have already been educated regarding the new hybrid schedule, class registration went smoothly, and continued efforts should make the process a smooth transition. Information is available via "The Viking," and there will be a parent "open house" offered on Monday, August 27th at 7:00 p.m.
