On Monday night the Decorah Community School Board approved a policy that will require students to request approval for participation in non-school activities in events that take place during the same calendar time frame as similar school events (e.g., a non- school golf tournament in the same season as school golf). The policy is an attempt to ensure the best for individual students, as well as the teams they play with. There have been examples elsewhere in the state where a school has been stripped of state championships because a student had participated in an ill-advised non school activity. Many variables can play into this scenario, such as compromising amateur status or running afoul of Iowa High School Athletic Association rules. Hence the counsel and approval of school officials protect everyone involved.
