Winneshiek County facilities suffered at least $250,000 in damages during heavy rains and flooding in June. That's the report from County Engineer Lee Bjerke in the wake of news that Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds has asked FEMA to declare Winneshiek County and 29 other Iowa counties disaster areas in the wake of the storms.
Bjerke says if Winneshiek County is given the disaster designation, the federal government will pay 75 percent of those repair costs, with the State of Iowa picking up another 10 percent. That would leave Winneshiek County having to pay only $37,500 of the quarter million dollars in repairs.
