Alliant Energy's new energy goals call for eliminating the use of coal by 2050

Alliant Energy has released an updated Corporate Sustainability Report that sets a goal of cutting carbon emissions 80 percent and eliminate all existing coal-produced electricity from its energy mix by 2050.

The utility says it plans to spend more than $2 billion on new renewables and double the number of wind power sites from six to 12, reaching a level of more than 2,700 megawatts of wind power by 2021.  Additionally, it is promising that renewables will be over 30 percent of its energy mix by 2030 systemwide.  It also predicts it will deliver up to 40 percent of its energy for Iowa customers from renewable sources by 2021.

Alliant says while the voluntary United Nations Paris Accord calls for reducing carbon 32 percent below 2005 levels by 2030, its plans are for a 40 percent reduction by that time.
