How much of an economic impact do recreational trails like the Trout Run Trail have on Northeast Iowa? Upper Explorerland Regional Planning has begun a study to find an answer to that question.
The planning agency is looking at recreational trails in Winneshiek, Howard, Allamakee, Clayton and Fayette counties. It has begun asking trail users to take an on-line survey about their use of the trails and spending habits in trail communities. The survey can be taken at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/G2BBY93. Surveying will continue throughout the summer.
A statewide survey sponsored by the Iowa Bicycle Coalition and conducted by the University of Northern Iowa concluded that recreational cyclists generate $364.8 million in direct and indirect economic impacts in Iowa. The study also estimated that bicycling saves Iowa $73.9 million annually in healthcare cost.
