There are several sporting events to take part in this year during Nordic Fest.
Molkky
A yard game that involves throwing a wooden baton at pins to accumulate points will be played at the Decorah Middle School field at 3 p.m. on Friday. The rules of the game are simple and anyone of any ability or age can play. Finland has a large Molkky following with many clubs and tournaments, along with the world championships. Demonstrations will start at 3:00 p.m. Friday with tournament play at 4:00 p.m. The tournament is open to anyone from ages 8 to 80. Kanolopet
Sign up for some fun along the beautiful Upper Iowa River. The Kanolopet is a canoe race and will take place at 6:30 p.m. from OFF The Driftless, 2012 Pulpit Rock Road, to the Twin Bridges located on 5th Street. The race will have two canoe divisions determined by the combined ages of the participants in each canoe and a third division for kayaks. The first canoe to pass under the Twin Bridges will be declared the winner. Registration may be completed at the Decorah Area Chamber of Commerce and must be completed by 5 pm. on Friday. Cost is $30 per person and includes canoe rental, life jackets and paddles. Those who provide their own canoe may enter for $20 per person.
Elvelopet
Decorah's "River Run" race will take place at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday. The course will take you along the Upper Iowa River and the surrounding area. The race begins and ends at City Hall (400 Claiborne Dr.). Hydration stations are provided along the course with fruit and drinks available at the finish line. Online registration ends on Thursday, July 26. You may also register in person at the Decorah Area Chamber of Commerce. Late registration accepted Friday, 6-8 p.m. at City Hall and Saturday, 6:30-7:15 a.m. at the Beverage Garden tent.
Nordic Rock Throw
The Rock Throw contest will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Decorah Middle School field. There are three weight classes for men and one weight class for women. Must be at least 18 years of age. Entry fee is $2. Located at the 400 block of River Street next to the Decorah Middle School.
Lutefisk Eating Contest
Put your lutefisk eating skills to the test in this competition. No registration or fee, just show up ready to eat! The contest will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday at the Courthouse Square.
The Ultimate Norseman Competition
Athletics play an important role in the Scandinavian cultures. Strength, stamina and a strong stomach are all traits of the Norse. Festers who participate in the three Saturday events: the Elvelopet 5K or 15K run, Rock Throw, and the famed Lutefisk eating contest will have their results combined to face off with other Ultimate Norsemen!
