NE Iowa residents who are covered by the Medicare program should be receiving their new cards soon.
Previous Medicare cards included the participant's Social Security number. Medicare has decided to remove social security numbers from the new cards in order to prevent fraud, fight identity theft, and keep taxpayer dollars safe.
Medicare has begun a phased roll-out of the new cards over a 12 month period to complete the changeover. Iowa will be one of the earlier states to get the new cards, and cards are already being sent out to Iowa addresses.
