Iowa State Auditor Mary Mosiman visited with Winneshiek County Republicans on Tuesday night. She was appointed Auditor of State by Governor Terry Branstad on May 13th, 2013, winning election to the office in 2014.
Mosiman is up for re-election in November, running against Democrat Rob Sand, a Decorah native.
In an interview with decorahnews.com, Mosiman stressed that she is a CPA, while Sand is not. She says that's important because the State Auditor's office would lose its status as a CPA firm if Sand were elected. That's because some of the statuatory duties of the office would have to be contracted out to an actual CPA firm. She says a CPA has led the State Auditor's Office for nearly 40 years.
Right now, the State Auditor's Office has become involved in auditing the state's switch to private supervision of the Medicaid program. There have been conflicting figures issued about the financial impact of this change. Mosiman says the audit will determine whether previous studies were "fairly presented." She tells decorahnews.com her agency will release a study about the privatization in a manner "as timely as possible." She promises the study will "provide clarity" to the issue, which has been hotly contested in the legislature.
