Decorah resident Melissa O'Rourke says her background in education, agriculture and law makes her a good choice to serve on the Winneshiek County Board of Supervisors.
She's a candidate in District #2, which includes half of the City of Decorah and the eastern part of Decorah Township. She's running as a Democrat for the seat now held by Republican Floyd Ashbacher.
O'Rourke told a campaign coffee this week that she's thankful "for the women on whose shoulders I stand," including her grandmother, who worked at the Rock Island Arsenal during World War II, and her mother, who served in the US Cadet Nurse Corps during WWII, serving stateside as replacements for registered nurses who enlisted and went overseas.
O'Rourke says she would bring "a progressive perspective" to the county board, including working to gain more local control over livestock feeding operations. She says it's important to protect the water, soil and air in Iowa and promises to look at what's best for all of Winneshiek County.
