It's not too late to plant soybeans in Northeast Iowa

There's still time for area farmers to plant soybeans.

ISU Extension Office Crop Specialist Brian Lang in Decorah says farmers can switch to an earlier season variety.  If a late planting is feasible, Lang recommends using narrower rows (i.e. 15 or 20-inch vs. 30-inch) and increasing the seed population a bit, since late-planted soybeans don't cover the rows as well as the earlier planted soybeans do.

Lang also says for corn fields, the long-term average GDD (growing degree days) for late June is about 20 per day.
