(Analysis by decorahnews.com's Paul Scott):
Winneshiek County supervisors have officially canvassed the results of last Tuesday's primary. They show 1,539 people cast ballots in the primary.
1,192 people cast ballots for Democratic Party candidates, while 344 people cast ballots for Republican Party candidates. That represents 77 percent of primary voters casting ballots for Democrats and 23 percent for Republicans.
But there are several factors to consider before using those figures to project results in November. There are 13,701 registered voters in Winneshiek county--which means only 11 percent of registered voters went to the polls.
More importantly, almost all the contested ballot spots were on the Democratic side, so they were the more motivated voters.
Democrats might be encouraged by their turnout, but typically a lot more people head to the polls in November than head there in June.
