Iowa Public Television's Decorah translator, Channel 28, which serves Northeast Iowa, has gone out of service indefinitely as of Thursday.
The translator was shut down because a full-service television station serving western Wisconsin has been re-assigned to channel 28 by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). FCC rules state that a full-service station is a higher priority than a translator, forcing IPTV to find another channel.
IPTV now will have to find a channel that will be able to work as a signal translator, but in the meantime the Channel 28 signal has been shut off.
IPTV officials say viewers in northeast Iowa may try rescanning their televisions to receive IPTV's signal via Channel 18 from Mason City or Channel 35 from Cedar Rapids. The change does NOT affect viewers with cable or satellite service.
