The extreme heat and humidity, combined with an infestation of blackflies, were too much for the 5-day-old and 7-day-old eaglets of Decorah's north nest. The eaglets died Friday.
Blackflies carry a pathogen that can overwhelm the immune systems of young birds. Insect hatches that overlap the vulnerable developmental stages of eagles and falcons can have devastating effects. The Decorah north eaglets' late hatch had a significant impact on their survival rate.
