The Interim School Board for the reorganized Decorah Community School District (that begins July 2019) met Wednesday night to discuss transition issues. No action items were addressed but they reviewed the mechanical processes for "step and lane" shuffles as North Winneshiek teachers move to the new district; and the need for multiple accounting and payroll practices in the transition time.
Also discussed was disposition of fixed assets and the storage of such items, with the probability of an auction after closure of the North Winneshiek School. It was noted that the transition is much easier because of North Winneshiek having no debt, or issues with rental contracts.
The most discussed item was the need to replace a problematic sewage lagoon with a new septic system – which would be cheaper and better than attempting to repair and increase the capacity of the lagoon system currently in use. While a new septic system would be virtually essential in any effort to later sell the property, North Winneshiek Superintendent Tim Dugger also noted the district wanted to be "good stewards of that property," and that funds have be reserved for that project.
