The month of May is "Community Action Month." Northeast Iowa Community Action Corporation (NEICAC) has been serving the residents of northeast Iowa for 53 years. NEICAC serves Allamakee, Bremer, Chickasaw, Clayton Fayette, Howard and Winneshiek counties. NEICAC's main administrative offices are located in Decorah.
Les Askelson, Julie Wurtzel and John Beard represent Winneshiek County on NEICAC's Board of Directors. Askelson is the Board Chair, and serves on the Finance and Personnel Committees. Wurtzel is the Board Vice-Chair, and serves on the Planning & Evaluation Committee. Beard serves on the Personnel and Public Relations & Media Committees.
In 2017 NEICAC served an unduplicated 576 Winneshiek County households containing 1,218 individuals, not including those that were only using EARL Public Transit. In Winneshiek County, NEICAC provided Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program supplemental payments to the heating energy provider for 412 households containing 801 Winneshiek County residents; provided 410 households with energy conservation education, provided 164 households with crisis assistance; and assisted 51 households with negotiations with their utility vendors.
NEICAC also administers the Winneshiek County General Assistance/General Relief program through a 28E agreement with Winneshiek County. The NEICAC Winneshiek County Family Service in Decorah is the point of contact for this program.
